We are one term into our exciting year of learning and are looking forward to our topic this term – Extreme Regions
RELIGION
Local Church – Community - SOURCES
We will be looking firstly at sources of the Bible and why the Bible is the special book of the church. We will learn how many books the Bible consists of and about both the New and Old Testament. We will also consider the similarities and differences between the Catholic and Jewish faith.
Eucharist - Relating - UNITY
The children will learn how the eucharist helps to keep the memory of Jesus’ sacrifice alive and present in a special way. We consider what nourishes and what spoils friendship and unity and how the Eucharist challenges and enables the Christian family to live and grow in communion every day.
Lent/Easter - Giving - DEATH AND NEW LIFE
The last unit of study this term is about Lent - a time of giving in preparation for the celebration of the sacrifice of Jesus.
ENGLISH
In our English lessons, we will be looking at texts with links to our topic including: Holes by Louis Sachar, Shackleton’s journey by William Grill and Home Sweet Home from Literacy Shed. We will use these as stimulus for our own writing to produce letters, narratives, character descriptions, balanced arguments, reports and instructions.
Grammar is taught during our English lessons. This term will be focusing on direct and reported speech, the progressive and perfect tense, subjunctive mood, commas for clarity, synonyms and antonyms, word class, sentence types and formal and informal language.
Weekly spellings are provided on Mondays. These are based on the National Curriculum spelling lists for Year 5 and 6. We will also revise previous years’ spelling rules throughout Year 6. There will be a spelling test every 4 weeks.
MATHS
During this half term, we will start by focusing on converting units of measure before swiftly moving on to algebra where children will be looking to calculate the Nth term and use algebraic rules to correctly find an answer. After this, we will move onto decimals and also incorporate percentages. After half term, all children should be able to convert between decimals and percentages as well as calculate a percentage of an amount.
Later in the term, we will be covering area, perimeter and volume and finally statistics.
We will continue with our weekly arithmetic tests. Please continue to check in with your child about their progress.
SCIENCE
Our first topic this term is Evolution and Inheritance.
Our lessons will cover, recognising that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. Understanding that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. We will also learn to identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution
Our second topic, after the half term break is Animals, including humans
In this topic we will learn how to identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function. We will also work to describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans.
If you have any further questions about our learning this term, please call in to see Mrs Chamberlain.
